Hey y’all! A lot of people are always commenting on how I manage to accomplish a number of tasks in one day. In fact, they always shake their heads at me and say they don’t know how I do it. I’ll tell you how I do it.
I don’t sit down much.
I know that sounds silly, but it’s true. It’s really hard for me to sit down when I know that I still have tasks that need to be marked off my to-do list. I’m pretty sure this a form of OCD, perhaps in some mild form. Sometimes, it drives Ryan crazy, but I really do struggle to relax if dirty dishes are piled in the sink, laundry needs to be folded, or I know that the toilets could use a good scrubbing. Again, some sort of OCD.
So, because everyone is always asking me how I do so much in just one day, I wanted to give y’all a brief glimpse into my day-to-day life. This past Tuesday, I decided to keep track of everything (almost) I did on a relatively typical day.
5:15am – First Alarm Goes Off. I don’t know why I set my first alarm for so early lately. Sometimes, I like to join the 5AM Writers Club (where I write at 5AM and then report my progress to other club members), but I haven’t done that in a while.
6:00am – Wake up, take dogs out, and turn on coffee. We have a specific routine, and the dogs know they have to wait until I turn on the coffeemaker and put my shoes on before we can go outside.
6:20am – Shower. Honestly, this is the quickest part of my morning. I’ve never been one to waste time standing under the hot water. I get in, do what I need to do, and get out.
6:40am – Apply makeup. My morning makeup routine is so quick. I don’t wear a ton of makeup everyday, mostly just powder, blush, and eye-makeup, so this part goes pretty quickly.
7:00am – Dry & straighten my hair while watching YouTube videos (of bloggers that I follow). I have recently started taking advantage of this time that I’m straightening my hair to catch up on some videos and podcasts. I’ve been trying to make the most of the little bits of spare time lately, squeezing in whatever I can whenever I can.
7:20am – Feed the doggies, and dress for work. Usually, by the time I’m getting dressed, Poppy knows it’s time for our second walk, and she’s whining and sniffing my shoes. Gotta love being rushed!
7:25am – More coffee. Need I say more?
7:30am – Take dogs out for a longer walk. We usually walk around another one of the buildings near ours, mainly until each of the dogs does his/her business and gets to sniff a few trees.
7:40am – Warm up car. This, of course, all depends on how cold it is outside.
7:45am – Leave for work. Apply lipstick in the car.
(P.S. I’m in love with this new headband from the Ann Taylor LOFT outlet)
7:55am – Stop at Harris Teeter to grab something for breakfast. Obviously, not always part of the plan. Just depends on how many groceries I have in the house.
8:05am – Wonder why I’m always early to work. Seriously. I’m almost ALWAYS the first one to the office.
8:15am – Head into work once one of my coworkers arrives.
1:00pm – Meet a friend for lunch at Mozzo Deli, the BEST breakfast/lunch spot in Mt Pleasant, I think. Seriously, y’all, this place is amazing! I love their Everything bagel with tomato, bacon, and cream cheese—it’s my favorite breakfast, and they know me pretty well in there. Also, side note: being able to meet friends for lunch hasn’t been “typical” for me for the last two months, mainly because Ryan’s been working out of town. Now that he’s home (and took a few days off work), I had a chance to catch up with several people!
1:55pm – Place a to-go order from Mozzo for my coworker. When Mozzo has French Onion Soup, she can’t resist! What can I say? They really are the best place for lunch in town.
2:10pm – Back to work! I love taking the late lunch because it makes the rest of the day go by that much faster.
5:05pm – Leave work & head for home.
5:15pm – Check mail. Still waiting on my Christmas cards to show up. It may be time to reorder…*Note: by the time my cards finally arrived, I had already ordered more and picked them up at Sam’s Club… now I have way, way too many Christmas cards. It took them over two weeks to arrive.*
5:25pm – Change out of work clothes. Typically, I change into leggings and a t-shirt, unless we have somewhere else we’re planning to go later on. Leggings are my favorite lounge clothes, especially the ones I have from Target.
5:30pm – Tidy house, meaning I pick up all the dog toys that Goose & Poppy have scattered all over the place. Seriously, they love to take each individual toy out of the bucket and scatter them across the house each and every single day. And then, like a good little maid, I pick them up and return them to the bucket, and the process starts all over again.
5:45pm – Unload the dishwasher. Ryan helps because this is one of my least favorite chores ever.
6:00pm – Start cooking supper with Ryan (Salisbury steak, mashed potatoes, and green beans). I love the Pioneer Woman’s Salisbury Steak recipe, but sometimes I don’t quite follow it to the letter and play around with it. I do love to sauté mushrooms and onions in olive oil and then brown beef patties before making a gravy and letting it all simmer for a while.
6:45pm – Repaint toe and fingernails while supper cooks. I found this cute little pack of three neutral OPI colors (and a top coat) at TJ Maxx for $6, and I love the white! I didn’t think I would, but I really do! It’s a wintery white.
7:00pm – Eat supper while watching Christmas with the Kranks. I have this list of Christmas movies that we need to watch in December, and this one was on the list, so we can cross that one off!
9:00pm – Instagram Live with my critique partner, Peggy, about how life can sometimes get in the way of our writing goals. I think I’ve told y’all about my critique partner before. Peggy is a friend (yes, an Instagram friend) that I talk to almost every day, and we bounce ideas off each other and discuss different writing topics. And different life problems, too.
10:00pm – Wash face, brush teeth, and take contacts out. I really should do this earlier in the night because I know I don’t spend enough time taking care of my skin. I need to develop a better nightly routine for skincare. When I wait too late, I tend to use a makeup-removing wipe instead of face soap and water. It’s the quick way, but I know my skin suffers for it.
10:15pm – Get into bed, make list for tomorrow, and watch an episode of Live PD on DVR. Sometimes, it’s nice to just lie in bed and watch TV. One of the dogs will usually come in the bedroom and curl up on the bed with me, and I enjoy those cuddles.
11:00pm – Ryan wakes me up when he comes to bed, and I set my alarms for the next morning. Yeah, I can’t stay awake for very long once I crawl under the warm, cozy blankets.
11:05pm – Zzzzzz…
So there you have it: a day in my life. Honestly, I wish I could turn off my need to do so much in a day, but I don’t know how. I feel compelled to accomplish a lot of tasks, and I’m constantly adding to my list. Sometimes, I think if I just had a few extra days in a week (or maybe an extra week in the month), I’d be able to get all caught up, but I don’t think that’s going to happen. I can dream though, right?
