Everyone has a go-to restaurant. When in doubt, you go to that place because you know that your food will taste delicious and your service will be outstanding (think Chick Fil A) For us, that place is Shelter Kitchen + Bar in Mt. Pleasant.

We’ve been going there for a couple years now—ever since Ryan moved to Mt Pleasant. I’m fairly certain that his old roommate, Ben, introduced us to Shelter. Everything I’ve ever had from there is good from brunch to dinner. And seriously, their fried chicken biscuits at brunch with a side of  pimento cheese grits…Wow!

The trick to trying a lot of different things at Shelter is to go on Tuesday nights during Happy Hour. Why, you may ask? ½ Price burgers, that’s why! Every Tuesday night, Shelter offers any of their burgers—about ten options—at half price. And, during Happy Hour, all the apps and small plates are ½ price, too. Happy Hour runs from 4-7pm, M-F.

On the 4^th of July, after going to the beach (I’ll tell that story on Tuesday in my July 4^th recap) and taking naps, Ryan and I knew we wanted to go out to dinner somewhere that we could take Goose with us. Shelter is very Fido-Friendly, so we decided to head on up there because, well, it’s our go-to restaurant.

Shelter has so many yummy appetizers that it’s tough to choose. Normally, we split the Chipotle Loaded Fries with bacon, chipotle ranch, scallions, gouda, jack, and cheddar cheese. They are so, so delicious and the portion is definitely sharing sized. The BBQ Slider Trio is also a really good option (you can make a meal out of loaded fries and BBQ Sliders). On the 4^th, though, we decided to try something we had never had before: the Lowcountry Rolls. Crispy wonton rolls stuffed with pulled pork and collard greens…wow! These were so tasty, especially when we dipped them in the house-made Carolina BBQ sauce.

For my entrée, I went with my Old Faithful—the House Burger. It’s a thick Angus beef burger with cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion, and garlic aioli on a fluffy bun, and it’s so good. That garlic aioli alone is to die for! Sometimes I ask for extra!

Shelter doesn’t only have burgers, though. Ryan loves to order their Lowcountry Boil (a staple around here), and they have many other delicious sandwiches and entrees. If you’re ever in search of a great place to have brunch, Shelter is a good choice.

If you’re visiting the Charleston/Mt Pleasant area, I would recommend Shelter. It’s a great, casual atmosphere, it’s very dog-friendly, and the food is really good. And honestly, if you’re able to get by on Burger Night, do it! It’s a steal!
